There are over 6000 single family residences in the area. Major
residential subdivisions are Herman's Orchard, Jost Farms, Portland

Because of the area's rural nature and the limited access to sewers, many
home sites are at least three acres (the minimum size necessary for homes
with septic systems). A sizable portion of the area is still in farmland
or woodlands.
Karst (sinkholes) prevent development of certain areas.
Laclede Gas Co. stores natural gas under approximately 9000 acres of the
Old Jamestown area.
The Missouri River can be seen at the northern end of New Halls Ferry Road and at
the Highway 367 (Lewis & Clark) bridge. In Sioux Passage Park, the river
can be seen up close from the new boat ramp area. Glimpses of the Illinois bluffs across
the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are available at various locations in
the area. To the south, the St. Louis Arch can be seen from high points.
